Garth Fagan Dance performance to highlight Black History Month at SUJanuary 29, 2009Matthew R. Snydermrsnyder@syr.edu

The renowned performers of Garth Fagan Dance are coming to Syracuse University for a Black History Month performance. The show by the Rochester-based company is part of SU’s Black History Month celebration; it will take place Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium, in the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. The performance is sponsored by Pulse Performing Arts Series.

Tickets are on sale now at the Schine Box Office; they are $5 for students with SU I.D.; $15 for SU faculty, staff, alumni and Pulse partners; and $20 for the general public. For box office information, call (315) 443-4517. Free parking will be available in the Lehman and Harrison lots.

In its 37-year history, Garth Fagan Dance has brought its unique movements to audiences worldwide. It has been featured on the “Tonight Show” and PBS’ “Great Performances,” and company founder and artistic director Fagan earned a Tony Award for his work on “The Lion King.”

Fagan’s singular style, known and taught as the “Fagan Technique,” fuses the techniques and improvisation of Afro-Carribean, ballet, modern and postmodern dance. The company has received the Governor’s Arts Award from New York State, and five of its members have received New York Performance Awards. Pulse Performing Arts Series, presented by SU’s Division of Student Affairs, provides SU undergraduates and the Central New York community with out-of-classroom opportunities to attend and participate in programs, performances, exhibitions and events in the performing and visual arts.
