Zubal-Strang named director of administration for SU’s College of Arts and SciencesJanuary 15, 2009Rob Enslinrmenslin@syr.edu

Kathryn Zubal-Strang ’87 has been appointed director of administration for The College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) at Syracuse University. In this newly created position, Zubal-Strang reports directly to Dean George Langford and is responsible for managing The College’s visioning and priority-setting process. Zubal-Strang formerly served as assistant secretary to SU’s Board of Trustees for 13 years.

“I am thrilled to be returning to The College of Arts and Sciences-not as a student, but as an administrator,” says the Pennellville resident, who earned a B.A. in linguistics. “The experience I gained in the Office of the Board of Trustees has greatly prepared me for this exciting leadership role.”

In her new capacity, Zubal-Strang will serve as the dean’s chief of staff, organizing the announcement of new visioning initiatives, managing seed/planning grants for said initiatives, and overseeing the implementation of the administrative restructuring of the dean’s office. She will support The College’s new Vision Steering Committee, as well as the preparation and revision of white papers from the visioning and priority-setting process.

Prior to working for the Board of Trustees, Zubal-Strang served as an administrative specialist in SU’s Office of Alumni Relations and worked at the New York State Institute for Health and Human Services. Zubal-Strang says she is excited to be returning to the place where she “cut her teeth” as a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Eta Pi Upsilon, the national academic and women’s honor societies, respectively. “I really look forward to working directly with students and faculty members, and to carrying out the Chancellor’s vision of Scholarship in Action,” she says.

Zubal-Strang’s appointment is part of a larger restructuring effort within A&S, designed to optimize resources and to better position The College on a national scale. “We want to create a top-quality residential college that draws on the strengths of our liberal arts programming and of SU’s eight professional schools,” says Langford, who joined A&S in July 2008.

“Kathryn Zubal-Strang is a daughter of The College and is integral to this process.”More information about The College, which is SU’s oldest and largest academic unit, is available at http://thecollege.syr.edu/.
