Film screening and cultural forum to be presented at The Warehouse Dec. 10December 09, 2008Kelly Homan Rodoskikahoman@syr.edu

The Casita Cultural Center Project, an initiative affiliated with the Latino-Latin American Studies Program in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences, will host a film screening and cultural forum, the project’s first public event, on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 6-8 p.m. at The Warehouse Auditorium, 350 W. Fayette St.

The film “Raices,” directed by Angel “Cucco” Pe?a, will be screened at 6 p.m. The film documents the origins, trajectory and development of Puerto Rican Bomba y Plena musical traditions.

Following the screening, at 7:15 p.m., a discussion will be held on Caribbean musical heritages, with demonstrations of live music, dance and performance in the Bomba y Plena traditions, featuring presenters who work with the Latino/a community on Syracuse’s West Side.

The Casita Cultural Project aims to acknowledge Latino/a populations in Syracuse and to promote their histories, heritages and legacies by creating a space where the University and community will interact dynamically through activities and events that involve music, dance, workshops, a bilingual library, lectures, documentation programs and more.

Through the project, Scholarship in Action projects will be established to encourage students’ meaningful involvement in the Latino/a community of Syracuse while tapping into the creativity, social resilience and cultural resources that the community harbors.
