Syracuse University is looking for people who, in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “beloved community,” have made a positive difference in the lives of others. The 2009 Unsung Heroes Awards will be presented during the Martin Luther King Jr. 2009 Celebration dinner on Jan. 18, 2009, in the Carrier Dome.

Individuals or community groups who exemplify the spirit, life and teachings of Martin Luther King Jr., but who are not widely recognized for their efforts, are eligible for nomination. Past recipients have been recognized for their work to advance human rights, nonviolence, diversity and nondiscrimination; promote youth; advocate for peace and justice; build bridges between diverse communities; and provide opportunities for people living on the margins of society.

Awards will be given in four categories: youth/teen from the Greater Syracuse community; adult from the Greater Syracuse community; student from SU or the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF); and faculty or staff member from SU or SUNY-ESF.

Nominations may be submitted online at http://hendricks.syr.edu (click on the Martin Luther King Jr. button on the right); or mailed to Awards Committee, Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, Hendricks Chapel, Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y. 13244-1110. The nomination deadline is Friday, Nov. 21.

For more information on the award, contact Ginny Yerdon at Hendricks Chapel at 443-2901 or gyerdon@syr.edu; or Judy Holmes, chair of the Unsung Heroes Award Committee at 443-8085 or jlholmes@syr.edu.
