Message from Chancellor Nancy Cantor on death of student in MadridNovember 05, 2008SU News ServicesSUnews@syr.edu

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

It is with profound sorrow that I inform you about the loss of one of our students, who died unexpectedly this morning. Gleidy Espinal, 20, a junior in the Whitman School of Management, was spending this semester in Madrid, studying through the SU Abroad center there.

All of our hearts are with Gleidy’s family, friends, the Whitman community, and the students, faculty and staff who knew her on campus and in Madrid.

The loss of a member of our campus community is so difficult and impacts all of us in different ways. That is why we come together to comfort those affected.

The University’s Student Affairs staff is providing on-site counseling here and in Madrid to support those who had a personal connection to Gleidy. In addition, Hendricks Chapel will be open today at noon for those who wish to come together for quiet reflection. Information on a memorial service will be provided once plans have been made.

The University has a wide array of counseling services available to every member of the campus community. The Counseling Center (443-4715), Hendricks Chapel (443-2901), and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (443-1087) are all available to anyone who feels he or she needs support.

Our thoughts are with Gleidy’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.

Cordially,

Nancy Cantor
