MacJannet Foundation announces inaugural global citizenship prizeOctober 23, 2008Peter Englotptenglot@syr.edu

The MacJannet Foundation and the Talloires Network, of which Syracuse University is a member, have announced a competition for the first-ever MacJannet Prize to promote student civic engagement and community service by recognizing exceptional student initiatives based in universities around the world and by contributing financially to their ongoing public service efforts.

The MacJannet Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization established in 1968 for the benefit of humankind by working to build a community of global citizens. The Talloires Network is an international alliance of universities committed to promoting the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education.

Eligible student initiatives and programs for this new prize should creatively address an important social issue that is local, national or global in scope (for example, poverty, health, education or peace) and must have had a significant and positive effect on the issue and on individuals or communities. Special consideration will be given to programs that have potential to be replicated in other locations, promote long-term sustainability, demonstrate social, economic and environmental benefits to local communities, and encourage innovation.

One first-place prize of $5,000 will be awarded, along with two second-place prizes of $2,500 each and five third-place prizes of $1,000 each.

Nominations are due Dec. 15. Finalists will be notified by Jan. 21, 2009, with awards announced in Talloires, France, in June 2009. Anyone can nominate a program, including his or her own.

For details or to nominate a program, visit: http://www.macjannetprize.org.
