JPMorgan Chase & Co. opens its 2008 Fall Speaker Series with intellectual property lawyer Andrew Cadel Thursday, Sept. 25. A 5 p.m. reception in the lobby of the Heroy Geology Laboratory will precede a seminar with Cadel in Heroy Auditorium from 5:45-7 p.m.
Cadel, a managing director and chief intellectual property counsel at JPMorgan Chase & Co., will speak about “Measuring Success,” focusing on a financial approach to evaluating intellectual productivity. Cadel is responsible for patents and other intellectual property and technology law matters at JPMorgan Chase. He has been active in the current patent reform efforts, including testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the subject.
While on campus, Cadel will also meet with SU College of Law students and researchers at the SU New Technology Law Center, and will meet in smaller break-out sessions with faculty and students from several SU schools and colleges.
Prior to joining JPMorgan Chase in 1999, Cadel was a senior attorney at IBM and handled legal coverage for the financial services sector and the City of New York. He also worked as a corporate associate for Brobeck, Phleger and Harrison from 1994-97, focusing on cases involving IP and technology issues for public and private securities offerings. He also served as a litigator focusing on trade secret and copyright disputes for Weil, Gotshal and Manges.
Cadel holds a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.
“The speaker series brings to campus some leaders in such areas as IT governance, infrastructure management, human resources, law, and finance,” says David Dischiave, professor of practice in the School of Information Studies (iSchool), who is working with JPMorgan Chase staff to implement the speaker series. “These visits provide our students with a wonderful opportunity to interact with practitioners and to network with future employers. It also allows faculty members to gather input from professionals so they can incorporate changes into the curriculum to better meet the current and future needs of industry.”
The next speaker in the series is Larry O’Donnell, human resources executive based inMumbai, India, on Wednesday, Oct. 1.
