Syracuse University receives $125,000 grant to support commercialization of research across New York stateAugust 12, 2008Jaclyn D. Grossojgrosso@law.syr.edu

Syracuse University College of Law’s New Technology Law Center (SUNTEC) has received a second $125,000 grant from Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli (D-NY) that will assist New York state universities in setting up technology commercialization clinics across the state. The training will be modeled on the existing SU College of Law Technology Commercialization Research Center (TCRC) established by SU law professor Ted Hagelin more than 20 years ago. The TCRC was the first program in the country specifically designed to train law students in the field of technology commercialization.

“We are very grateful for Assemblyman Magnarelli’s continued support, and we are eager to partner with other universities in New York state to create a statewide network of technology commercialization clinics,” says Hagelin.

The schools identified to participate include Niagara University, RIT and SUNY Stony Brook. The outreach program will consist of helping graduate programs in law, engineering, business and other disciplines provide technical, marketing and legal research and analysis to start-up companies and universities endeavoring to bring new technologies to market. Participation in such a program would offer graduate students in New York state a unique opportunity to study technology commercialization in a real-world setting while providing client organizations with valuable research and analysis.

“As a proud graduate of Syracuse University’s College of Law, I’m happy to have helped secure these funds,” Magnarelli says. “TCRC is a groundbreaking law program that allows students access to intellectual property and technology commercialization curricula. By providing research in both these specialized fields, students help bring new businesses to the marketplace.”

Further, as the chair of the Task Force for University-Industry Cooperation, Magnarelli hosted roundtable events with Hagelin around the state and also secured funding for the New York state technology commercialization clinics in the 2007-08 state budget.

Since its inception, the SU TCRC has undertaken more than 100 technology commercialization research projects on behalf of large, medium, small and start-up companies, universities, federal research laboratories and technology development organizations. The grant is funded by the Empire State Development Corp.
