Whitman School celebrates fifth anniversary of school namingMarch 17, 2008Amy Schmitzaemehrin@syr.edu

The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University will celebrate its fifth annual “Whitman Day” on April 2. The day will be full of activities to celebrate Martin J. Whitman’s continuous support of the school that bears his name and to acknowledge his numerous contributions to the investment community.

Whitman Day will kick off at 11:30 a.m. with the unveiling of the Whitman School of Management Wall of Fame. Whitman will be honored as the first inductee of the Wall of Fame; later this year, the inaugural class of inductees will be announced and honored. The Whitman Wall of Fame will induct new members annually.

Whitman Day continues at noon with the presentation of the inaugural Martin J. Whitman Distinguished Service Award. Dean Melvin T. Stith and Whitman will present Richard Haydon ’66 (A&S), managing director of Neuberger Berman, with the award in the Milton Room of the Whitman building. Haydon, well known in the finance industry and a long-time supporter of the Whitman School, has been with some of Wall Street’s most prestigious houses, including Goldman, Sachs & Co., Gabelli & Co. and Omega Advisors, Inc.

The presentation of the Martin J. Whitman Distinguished Service Award will be followed by the recognition of Whitman Student Scholars and Whitman Faculty Fellows.

The fifth annual Whitman Day will conclude with a keynote address by J. Bruce Flatt, managing partner and CEO of Brookfield Asset Management. Flatt was previously president and COO of Brookfield Asset Management, and has held other senior management positions in the company since 1992. He is also the director of Brookfield Asset Management and affiliates. Flatt earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Manitoba.

Brookfield Asset Management is a global asset manager focused on property, power and other infrastructure assets with approximately $95 billion of assets under management.

Flatt’s lecture, “Investing in Turbulent Times,” will take place at 2:15 p.m. in the Lender Auditorium, located on the concourse level of the Whitman building. The lecture is free and open to the public.

“Because we bear the name of such a remarkable person, every day we’re able ask ourselves: what can we do to make this a better place?” says Stith. “On April 2, we are so pleased to honor Marty Whitman and to celebrate five years of being ‘Whitman’ with such notable guests and a lineup of exceptional activities.”

The Whitman School is located at 721 University Ave. Paid parking is available in the University Avenue Garage. For more information or to set up interviews, contact Amy Mehringer, communications manager for the Whitman School, at (315) 443-3834 or aemehrin@syr.edu.
