Newhouse’s Rubin named Journalism Administrator of the Year by Scripps Howard FoundationMarch 07, 2008Wendy S. Loughlinwsloughl@syr.edu

David M. Rubin, dean of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, was named Journalism Administrator of the Year by the Scripps Howard Foundation as part of its annual National Journalism Awards.

As part of the honor, Rubin receives $10,000 and the Charles E. Scripps award, and the Newhouse School receives a $5,000 grant. The award is given in cooperation with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. An awards ceremony will be held April 18 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

“The Scripps Howard award recognizes what we at Syracuse University have known for nearly 18 years?that David Rubin is an incredible asset to communications education,” says Vice Chancellor and Provost Eric F. Spina. “He is the driving force behind the success of the Newhouse School, and we are fortunate to call him one of our own. This honor is well deserved.”

Dean of Newhouse since 1990, Rubin has made a major impact on all aspects of the school, from branding, fundraising and alumni relations to academic offerings, administrative structure and the quality of the student body. Always a school with a strong national reputation, Newhouse is now generally recognized as one of the nation’s premier communications schools.

Rubin will step down from the dean post this spring and, after a year’s sabbatical, will return to the school to teach.

The Scripps Howard Foundation’s National Journalism Awards honor the best in print, web and electronic journalism and journalism education. Open to all U.S. news organizations and college journalism educators, the awards recognize excellence in 17 categories. The awards also honor distinguished service to the First Amendment.

An awards program book featuring the winners and their work and videos of the winners’ work will be available online at http://scripps.com/foundation after April 18.
