Organist Hector Olivera to perform in Malmgren Concert Dec. 9December 04, 2007Kelly Homan Rodoskikahoman@syr.edu

Organist Hector Olivera will perform in the next concert of the 2007-08 Esther Drake and John Vincent Malmgren Concert Series at Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel on Sunday, Dec. 9.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Irving Garage and in the University’s West lots.

The program will include music by Bach, Franck and Lemare, as well as improvisations on well-known holiday themes chosen by the audience.

Olivera has performed with many orchestras, including the Dallas Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra and the Amsterdam Baroque Ensemble. As a soloist, he has performed at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, Royal Albert Hall in London and the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif.

The concert is part of the Malmgren Concert Series at Hendricks Chapel. The series was made possible by a generous gift to Hendricks Chapel from alumna Esther Malmgren ’42 in 1991. The free Sunday afternoon concerts, held throughout the year, feature a wide variety of music. Other scheduled performers in the 2007-08 Malmgren season are composer and guitarist Phil Kline and chamber music vocal ensemble Lionheart, Jan. 27, 2008, co-sponsored by Pulse; pianist Ann Schein, Feb. 17, 2008; and vocal ensemble Seraphic Fire, April 6, 2008, co-sponsored by Pulse.

Call Hendricks Chapel at 443-2901 for more information.
