SU Professor Bhatia to speak on geotextile tube dewatering in Nov. 8 seminarOctober 31, 2007Martin Wallsmwalls@syracusecoe.org

Shobha K. Bhatia, a professor of civil and environmental engineering in Syracuse University’s L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, will speak Thursday, Nov. 8, from 3-5 p.m. at the Renaissance Hotel in Syracuse as part of the Research & Technology Forums series, sponsored by the Syracuse Center of Excellence Office for Industry Collaboration.

Bhatia will speak about “geotubes,” or geotextile tube dewatering, a technique for safely separating solids from liquids, especially in cases in which contaminated sediment in lake and river environments must be remediated. The general public is encouraged to attend.

“Over the years, manufacturers have developed many different techniques for separating solids and liquids,” Bhatia explains. “Many of these techniques, such as dredging and stabilization, are expensive, time consuming and not always effective. In recent years, geotextile tube dewatering has experienced success and acceptance as a dewatering technology. Geotextile tubes are versatile products with tremendous potential in the dewatering of contaminated sediments, the mitigation of soil erosion in coastal and river environments, and the construction of foundations for artificial islands and retaining structures.”
