Watertown-based Jreck Subs endows distinguished lecture series at Syracuse UniversityApril 04, 2006Wendy S. Loughlinwsloughl@syr.edu

Jreck Subs and CEO Christopher Swartz ’92 have established the Jreck Subs Distinguished Lecture Series in Syracuse University’s Sport Management Program, a division of the College of Human Services and Health Professions.

“Syracuse University is very close to Chris Swartz’s heart, and he was looking for a way to get involved,” says Peter Whitmore, president of Jreck Subs. “In making a donation to his alma mater, he wanted to do something that could also benefit his Jreck Subs franchisees. They are very hard working, very successful entrepreneurs. It’s nice to be able to provide them with national exposure and to have them associated with this event.”

The Jreck Subs Distinguished Lecture Series will bring to the SU campus nationally and internationally recognized leaders in the sport industry to give a lecture each year. Guest lecturers will also meet with sport management students and speak to a class. Swartz believes the lectures will appeal to a broad range of SU students, as well as to the greater Syracuse community. “I’m very excited about the lecture series, and my intention is to be involved as much as possible,” he says.

Renowned sports agent David Falk ’72, who has represented athletes such as Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, and Alan Iverson, will deliver the first lecture April 6 at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. Following his talk, he and Swartz will present Jason McElwain with the Jreck Subs “Perseverance in Sports” Award. McElwain, a Rochester-area teen with autism, made national headlines in February when he scored 20 points in the last four minutes of his high school’s final home basketball game of the year–the only game in which he had ever played.

The lecture and award presentation are part of a charity sports auction sponsored by the Sport Management Club, an SU student group. The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. For more information, call (315) 443-9881 or visit http://hshp.syr.edu/schools/sport/auction.asp.
