Whitman School to join Chamber of Commerce for Campus to Community Connections FairFebruary 08, 2006Amy Schmitzaemehrin@syr.edu

The Martin J. Whitman School of Management and the Whitman School Alumni Club of Central New York are partnering with the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce for the first “Campus to Community Connections” fair, to be held 1-5 p.m. on Feb. 15 in the Atrium of the Whitman School. The fair will provide Whitman students with the opportunity to connect with local businesses for internships and potential employment after graduation.

More than 20 local companies will be in attendance, discussing internships and career opportunities with Whitman students. Companies include Bank of New York, Testone, Marshall and Descenza, Sensis Corp., Cooper Crouse-Hinds, Seneca Data, Bristol Meyers Squibb, and Philip Morris.

Chamber President and Whitman School alumna Darlene Kerr points out that retaining talented young people in CNY to fill professional positions is a high priority with the chamber’s member companies. “This is one of many initiatives where, working in collaboration with the Whitman School, we can address an issue of vital importance to all of our members,” says Kerr. “A successful internship/employment experience between a single student and one of our area employers is a proven way to retain talented, career-oriented young professionals in our region.”

“Community engagement is imperative for Whitman students,” says Melvin T. Stith, dean of the Whitman School. “One of our goals is to provide students with important out-of-classroom experiences. Internships are part of that and can provide students with crucial skills for their future careers.”
