World-renowned Taylor 2 Dance Co. to perform at April 11 inaugural finaleApril 06, 2005Sara Millersemortim@syr.edu

On April 11, as the finale to the daylong culmination of Chancellor Nancy Cantor’s inaugural year “University as Public Good: Exploring the Soul of Syracuse,” the world-renowned Taylor 2 Dance Company will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Schine Student Center’s Goldstein Auditorium. This free performance is open to the public. The performance is part of a series of year-end events designed to celebrate Cantor’s inaugural exploration.

Beginning Wednesday, March 30, students, faculty and staff members can use their SU I.D. at the Schine Box Office to pick up two free tickets each for the performance. Faculty can request a larger number of tickets to accommodate classes. Free tickets for the general public–four per person–will be available beginning April 4 at the box office. Public parking for the event will be available in the Waverly, Marion and Comstock paid lots for $3.25.

Paul Taylor, lauded by many critics as the best choreographer in the world, established Taylor 2 in 1993 to create a company that could accommodate performance requests as well as teach and provide community outreach. Taylor looked back to the 1954 origins of the Paul Taylor Dance Co. for the structure of Taylor 2: Six professionals with a particular gift for his style who perform his work throughout the world.

The repertory for Taylor 2 includes dances that span the broad spectrum of Taylor’s work and have been reworked into a version that is appropriate for a smaller ensemble of dancers.

The performance is presented by The College of Arts and Sciences. For more information, contact The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office at 443-7192. For more information about Taylor 2 and the Paul Taylor Dance Company, visit http://www.paultaylor.org . Information about other culminating inaugural events will be announced in the coming weeks.
