Roy W. Baker has been named associate dean of students in the Office of Greek Life and Experiential Learning (OGLEL) at Syracuse University, effective Oct. 11.

In this role, he is responsible for leadership development with SU’s nearly 300 student organizations, including 45 Greek chapters comprised of more than 2,000 students. He and the OGLEL staff will work closely with student leaders, alumni and national and international organizations to create a University experience that fosters good citizenship, creative expression and the celebration of diversity.

“I am delighted to welcome Roy Baker to the University community,” says Anastasia L. Urtz, dean of students. “Roy brings a wealth of experience in student leadership development and the energy and enthusiasm to inspire and guide our student leaders to great accomplishment.”

Previously, Baker was interim director of housing and residence life at Slippery Rock University. He was responsible for an auxiliary residential housing program with 2,875 beds, eight residence halls and an apartment complex. He has also held leadership positions as vice president and dean of students at Catawba College; associate dean of students and director of fraternity and sorority affairs at Bucknell University; and dean of students at Bluefield College.

“Roy’s extensive experience in student affairs administration, along with a demonstrated record of success in areas such as leadership program development, alcohol education and community building, make him an ideal fit for this position, ” says Barry L. Wells, senior vice president and dean of student affairs. “Our students are truly the beneficiaries of Roy’s appointment.”

Baker says, “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve SU, and I am looking forward to working with the staff and the student leaders at Syracuse in further developing nationally recognized programs that students will be proud to be a part of.”

Baker received a doctor of education degree from the University of Virginia, a master of social work degree from St. Louis University and a bachelor’s degree in social welfare from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise-Clinch Valley College. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Pi Kappa Phi National Fraternity Service Award and the Forrest D. Brown Community Service Award. His professional affiliations include membership in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the Association of Fraternity Advisors, Southern Association of College Student Affairs, Association of College and University Housing Officers, Southeastern Association of College and University Housing Officers, and the Pi Kappa Phi National Fraternity.
