New York City-based graphic designer Timothy Samara, principal of Stim Visual Communications, will speak at Syracuse University’s Shemin Auditorium on Oct. 13 at 12:15 p.m. Shemin Auditorium is located in Shaffer Art Building. This event is free and open to the public.

Samara is the author of “Making and Breaking the Grid: A Graphic Design Layout Workshop” and “Typography Workbook: A Real-World Guide to Using Type in Graphic Design.” He is a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts and Fashion Institute of Technology.

His research focuses on identity development and information design in print, electronic and environmental media. From 1992-1999, he was principal of Physiologic in Syracuse, where he developed communications for Syracuse China, Carrier, SU and Fox Television. In 1999, he became art director for Pettistudio. Subsequently, he was a senior art director at Ruder Finn, where he oversaw branding and communications for Novartis, Affymetrix, Afghan Wireless, the Barbados Tourism Board and Rowman & Littlefield publishers.

Samara holds a BFA in graphic design from the University of the Arts. He has also studied at Maine College of Art, the Basel School of Design in Switzerland, and in Vezelay, France.

His lecture is sponsored by the visual communications department in SU’s School of Art and Design.
