More than 5,500 family members are expected to arrive on the Syracuse University campus Oct. 1-3 for Parents Weekend 2004, a weekend of comedy, music, drama, football, academics and fun.

This year, Parents Weekend will include more than 50 events over the course of three days. For a complete calendar and details, visit the Parents Office Web site at http://students.syr.edu/depts/parents/pw2004.htm/.

“We are excited to welcome parents and family members back to campus and hope that they will immerse themselves in all we have planned for them,” says Colleen O’Connor Bench G’89, director of the Parents Office.

Parents Weekend registration is at the Skytop Office Building on South Campus and will be open Oct. 1 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Oct. 2 from 8 a.m.-11 a.m.

The Parents’ Place Hospitality Suite, located in the Panasci Lounge on the second level of the Schine Student Center, will serve as headquarters for event schedules and information; it also offers the chance to meet other parents and enjoy refreshments. On Oct. 1 from 4-5 p.m., Chancellor Nancy Cantor will be at Parents’ Place to meet and chat with students and families.

Oct. 1 from 2-4 p.m., “Take Your Parents to Class” will offer opportunities to attend class with students in a variety of specially designed Parents Weekend classroom experiences. SU faculty members will offer lectures and discussion on topics including modern art and economics.

Among the weekend’s art events is the two-part series, “A Visual and Performing Arts Extravaganza,” hosted by the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Located in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, this event features the University’s finest ensembles and student artwork. It begins Oct. 1 at 5 p.m., with a second session beginning at 8 p.m. Other musical offerings include “An A Cappella Afternoon” with SU’s premiere a cappella groups-The Mandarins and Orange Appeal-Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. That evening, the Black Celestial Choral Ensemble will perform at 9 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. Tickets for this show are $10 and can be purchased at the Schine Box Office, or by phone at (315) 443-4517.

Syracuse Stage will present its production of the contemporary classic “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” at the Archbold Theatre, 820 East Genesee St., with shows scheduled for Oct. 1-3. Also showing will be the comic show “Fully Committed” by Becky Mode, a one-man show in which an out-of-work actor staffs the phones at one of Manhattan’s top restaurants. “Fully Committed” will be staged at The Auditorium, 810 East Genesee St.. Tickets for both events are available at the Syracuse Stage Box Office, (315) 443-3275.

On Oct. 2, the Orange Friendzy Tent will open at 9 a.m. on the Quad to kick off the weekend’s football excitement with food and beverages. At 10:30 a.m., the Syracuse University Marching Band will perform musical selections, cheers and fight songs on the Quad to root on the Orange as the team prepares to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at noon in the Carrier Dome. For football ticket information, contact the Carrier Dome ticket office at (888) 366-3849.

The weekend will wrap up with the 12th Anniversary Edition of the SU Festival of Races, which begins at 9 a.m. at Manley Field House with the Prostate Awareness and Cancer Education (PACE) Race men’s 5K, women’s 5K, 3K fun and fitness Run, and the Community Fun(d) Walk.
