Five Syracuse University alumni – all of whom have celebrated at least their 50th class reunion – will be honored with Melvin A. Eggers Senior Alumni Awards during Reunion Weekend 2004. Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw will present William C. Archbold Jr. ’50, Marilyn J. Giancola ’46, Allen Ritz ’35 and June V. Rose ’35, ’36, G’43 with their awards in a ceremony during the Half-Century Dinner, to be held June 4; Harry Schlotzhauer ’38 will be presented with the award at his home.

The Eggers Award was established by former Chancellor William P. Tolley, who instituted the award program in 1988 to commemorate Chancellor Eggers’ outstanding years at SU. Recipients who best demonstrate outstanding loyalty and service to SU or their communities are selected by a committee of the Board of Directors of the SU Alumni Association.

Archbold, from Westchester, Pa., is senior partner in the law firm of Kassab, Archbold, Jackson & O’Brien. Archbold, who is the son of William C. Archbold Sr., and great-nephew of SU benefactor John Dustin Archbold, earned a J.D. from George Washington University and became a founding member of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice. Archbold received SU’s Alumni Award in 1976 in recognition of his status as one of the Philadelphia area’s foremost tort attorneys. Today, he serves on the boards of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and Lawyers for Consumer Rights.

Giancola and her late husband, Donald Giancola ’46, were founders of the international export company DJ Giancola Exports, Inc., which received the 1994 Presidential “E” Award for contributions to the U.S. Export Expansion Program. Giancola, who lives in DeWitt, N.Y., and Boca Raton, Fla., chaired the 50th Reunion Committee for her class and was honored with a 1978 SU Alumni Award. A member of the Orange Plus Hall of Fame, she has served on SU’s Athletic Policy Board and several other SU organizations. While a student, she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and the Spanish Club.

Ritz, of Syracuse, was a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi Business Society and Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Society during his time at SU; he went on to become a certified public accountant, comptroller, secretary and director of Morse Manufacturing. He is one of fewer than 20 people to be a member of the Financial Executives Institute for more than 50 years. A long-time advocate for SU women’s athletics, his gifts have established several scholarship funds and other programs at SU.

Rose is currently president of the Binghamton, N.Y., Civic Club and historian of the Nimmonsburg United Methodist Church. A Binghamton resident, she is a founding member of the Binghamton SU Alumni Club and has served as its secretary since 1988. Her career includes 40 years as a teacher and librarian, as well as farming, antique dealing and ownership of an ice cream store. She has been a member of the Eastern Star Lodge for more than 50 years and is active in the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse program.

Schlotzhauer, who resides in Liberty Lake, Wash., was one of the first certified property managers of a U.S. airport as real property officer of Phoenix’ Sky Harbor Airport; he was also successful in private real estate development in the Phoenix area. He is a founding member of the SU Alumni Club of Arizona and also served as president and a board member, and was one of the first SU alumni to become a local alumni representative for the University.

The Half-Century Dinner is hosted annually during Reunion Weekend by SU’s Office of Alumni Relations; this year’s dinner, at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center, will be open to all SU alumni who have celebrated their 50th Reunion. Featured classes this year will be ’29, ’34, ’39, ’44 and ’49. The evening will include cocktails at 6 p.m., award presentation by Shaw at 7 p.m., with dinner immediately following.
