Syracuse University is taking advantage of one of the area’s snowiest winters on record with several activities and events planned for Winter Carnival 2004, which will take place Feb. 12-15. A Valentine’s Day event will teach students to snowshoe and build igloos, and other indoor and outdoor activities will be in full swing along with chances to win rides and other prizes.

This year’s events offer a mix of visual and physical activities, from the Black Artist League’s Dance Explosion to winter crafts that will be offered for students, faculty and staff.

“We wanted to incorporate something everyone can enjoy. This year we are offering several major events that are co-sponsored by student organizations, such the Dance Explosion, UU Concerts and the UU Comedy event. In this time of the season of snow and cold, it’s great to have a block of events that are fun and bring students together,” says Ellen King, director of student events.Call 443-9592 for Winter Carnival 2004 updates or stop by 228E Schine Student Center and receive free Winter Carnival lip balms and snow scrapers. Event highlights include the following:

Thursday, Feb. 12

  • Black Artist League Dance Explosion. Goldstein Auditorium, Schine Student Center, 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Schine Box Office for $2.
  • UU Cinemas presents “American Splendor.” Watson Auditorium, 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for $3.

Friday, Feb. 13

  • Snow Shoe Jaunt at Beaver Lake. Rentals, instruction, and transportation cost $3, free (with refund) for SU undergraduates. Bus will leave College Place at 1 p.m., with anticipated return to campus at 5 p.m. Contact the Department of Recreation Services at 443-4967 for more details.
  • Winter Carnival A Cappella Concert. Featuring Grovestand, the Mandarins and Orange Appeal. Goldstein Auditorium, Schine Student Center, 8 p.m.
  • UU Cinemas presents “Lost In Translation” and “Groundhog Day.” Gifford Auditorium, 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for $3.
  • Ride the Zamboni Night. A night of skating with chances to win a Zamboni ride. Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion, 10 p.m.-1 a.m.

Saturday, Feb. 14

  • Build an Igloo and Snowshoe on the Quad. The Outing Club will teach participants how to build real igloos and snowshoe. Noon- 1 p.m.
  • Free Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides. Carriages will travel around the Quad from 2 -6 p.m., leaving from the front of the Schine Student Center.
  • Winter Crafts. Supplies and refreshments will be provided. Schine Student Center, 2-6 p.m.
  • Warren Kimble’s Syracuse “Snowman.” Merchandise and limited edition “Snowman” items will be available for purchase. Schine Student Center Atrium, 2-6 p.m.
  • UU Concerts presents Liz Phair. Goldstein Auditorium, Schine Student Center, 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Schine Box Office. Visit http://www.uu.syr.edu for more details.
  • Skate with a Date. Free skate rental for couples. Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion, 10 p.m.-1 a.m.

Sunday, Feb. 15

  • Intramural Co-Rec 4-ON-4 Volleyball Tournament. Flanagan Gymnasium, noon – 5 p.m.
  • Free Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides. Carriages will travel around the Quad from 2 -6 p.m., leaving from the front of the Schine Student Center.

  • Sex, Mugs and Rock ‘N Roll. Featuring “The Sandbox” and “The Last American Virgins.” Schine Student Center Underground, 8 p.m.
  • UU Comedy presents Dean Edwards of “Saturday Night Live” and Pablo Francisco of Comedy Central. Tickets are available at the Schine Box Office. Call 443-9599 for details.
