Syracuse University’s 2003 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the annual “Unsung Heroes” awards. The awards are presented to people from the University and Central New York communities who exemplify the spirit, life and teachings of King, but who are not widely recognized for their efforts. This year’s recipients are:

  • Virginia Donohue, founder and executive director of OnPoint for College, a program that helps underprivileged students apply for and enroll in college; [more]
  • Paula Johnson, professor of law in SU’s College of Law, whose leadership was critical in the establishment of the University’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center; [more]
  • Students of the Lutheran Campus Ministry at Hendricks Chapel, who were instrumental in helping to establish a community computer lab at First English Lutheran Church; [more] and
  • Akilah Fatimah Muhammad, a senior at Bishop Ludden Junior-Senior High School, who is a leader in promoting discussions of diversity and tolerance at her school. [more]

The awards will be presented during the 18th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at the Carrier Dome. The program, which will feature Pulitzer Prize-wining playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, begins at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. For further information about the celebration, call Hendricks Chapel at 443-5044.
