Summer Festival Orchestra auditions to be held June 27-29May 26, 2002Linda Kristensenlgkriste@syr.edu

Musicians from throughout Central New York are invited to sign-up to audition to participate in the 22nd Annual Summer Festival Orchestra that will perform in a free public concert at Syracuse University on Aug. 6.

The conductor of the Summer Festival Orchestra will be James Tapia, who directs orchestral studies in the Setnor School of Music and conducts the Syracuse University Symphony Orchestra. The director of the Summer Festival Orchestra has a history of success bringing together a diverse mix of musicians from the community at large to create a talented all-volunteer ensemble. With a different group of musicians each year, the director has five rehearsals to meld the musicians into a cohesive and entertaining performing ensemble. These musicians range from amateurs to professionals, from the young to the highly experienced. They include students from SU and other area schools as well as members of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and the Syracuse Symphony Youth Orchestra.

The auditions will be in 10-minute intervals over three days in the orchestra office, located on the fourth floor of Crouse College. Audition dates and times include:

? Thursday, June 27 from 4 to 8 p.m.; ? Friday, June 28 from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m..; and? Saturday, June 29 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Those wishing to audition can add their name to an audition list posted outside of the orchestra office or can go to any of the audition sessions and wait a turn. Musicians are asked to audition with short, contrasting lyrical and technical excerpts from solo or orchestral literature. All returning participants are advised to contact Tapia at their earliest convenience.

Beginning July 2, the five rehearsals will be on Tuesdays from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium of the Schine Student Center. The auditorium will also be the site of the free concert at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The concert program will be based around the “Symphony No. 2 in D major, Opus 43” by Jean Sibelius.

Those interested in earning college credit through participation in the Summer Festival Orchestra can call University College at 443-4135.
