Renee Schine Crown receives Chancellor’s MedalMay 24, 2002

Renee Schine Crown ’50, H’84 of Wilmette, Ill., was honored by Syracuse University earlier this spring when she was presented with the Chancellor’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement.

The Chancellor’s Medal for Outstanding Achievement was first presented by Syracuse University in 1967 on the occasion of then Chancellor William P. Tolley’s 25th anniversary as chancellor. In the decades since, the medal has been given to individuals in honor of their extraordinary contributions to the university, to their areas of expertise and/or to the community

A graduate of The College of Arts and Sciences, Crown recently completed her term on the University’s Board of Trustees and rotated to emeritus status. She was elected to the board in 1970.

Crown has long been a supporter of Syracuse University and other civic causes. Her first major commitment to Syracuse was providing the naming gift for the Hildegarde and J. Myer Schine Student Center. Built in 1985, the construction of the center ended a 73-year search to create a student center on the SU campus. Named it in memory of her parents, who founded the Schine Theaters, the Schine Student Center houses a dining center and a study lounge for students, the Syracuse University Bookstore, Center for Career Services, Center for Public and Community Services, and office space for many student organizations.

Crown also played a major role in the construction of Melvin A. Eggers Hall, the home to the Maxwell School.

In 1984, Crown received an honorary degree in recognition of her ongoing commitment to the University.

In 2000, Crown was honored with the George Arents Pioneer Medal. Named for the former chairman of the Syracuse University Board of Trustees, Arents Medals are warded annually to alumni of the University who have achieved excellence in their field of endeavor. Recipients of the award, which is the highest alumni honor the University bestows, are selected by the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
