SU’s programs in engineering and design host first joint open house for Syracuse communityApril 02, 2002Judy Holmesjlholmes@syr.edu

If you ever wanted a behind-the-scenes look at a fashion design studio just days before a major show, wondered exactly what chemical or environmental engineers do in the laboratory or were curious about where the designs for fabric, wallpaper or wrapping paper come from, the first joint engineering and design Open House at Syracuse University is the place to be.

Sponsored by the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science and the design programs in the School of Art and Design in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Open House will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on April 13. The event is free and open to the public and includes free parking in the Q-1, Q-4 and Sci-Tech lots off of Comstock Avenue and College Place. The Open House will take place in the design studios in Slocum, Lyman and Smith halls and in the engineering laboratories in Link and Hinds halls and in the Center for Science and Technology. All of the buildings can be accessed from College Place.

Free refreshments with an international flavor will be served in the lobbies of Smith and Link halls and in Room 005 of Slocum Hall. The food will be catered by students enrolled in a course in International Catering taught by Bradley Beran, assistant professor of nutrition and hospitality management in SU’s College for Human Services and Health Professions.

Maps will be available in the lobbies of all six buildings that are involved in the Open House, says Karen Bakke, chair of the Department of Surface Pattern, Textile and Fashion Design in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. “We are inviting our neighbors in the Syracuse community to come and see what our design and engineering programs are all about. It is an opportunity for high school students, their parents and anyone else who is curious about what we do to visit campus, meet students and faculty, learn about the projects they are working on and tour our facilities.”

Students and faculty from the departments of interior, industrial, surface pattern, fashion and textile design in the School of Art and Design will be available to answer questions and talk about their work, as will students and faculty from bioengineering, and computer, electrical, mechanical, aerospace, chemical, civil and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering.

“Come and visit, have some nice food, meet our students and faculty, and have some fun learning about our corner of the University,” Bakke says.
