One World Celebration 2002 kicks off on campus Feb. 7February 04, 2002

The University’s One World Celebration will kick off Feb. 7 with over a week of campus-wide activities, food, entertainment, conferences, displays, receptions and seminars. The purpose of the One World Celebration, which will run through Feb. 15, is to bring together under one title activities that highlight the diversity of SU and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and that typically occur on campus. The celebration is aimed at providing entertainment and educational events in the middle of winter.

“The One World Celebration is a collection of activities and initiatives that highlights the multicultural dimensions of the University community,” says Thomas V. Wolfe, dean of Hendricks Chapel and chair of the One World Celebration Planning Committee. “The weeklong series of activities provides great opportunities for students, faculty and staff to step beyond their own boundaries and to learn about other people and their experiences.” Wolfe is president of the campus chapter of Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars, the organization that sponsors the celebration.

The opportunities provided through the celebration are consistent with an initiative of the University’s Academic Plan aimed at enhancing the intellectual climate through diversity, and diversity is a key priority identified in the Division of Student Affairs 2001-2006 Strategic Plan. The One World Celebration is one of several programs this year that Student Affairs is integrally involved in to help foster a greater appreciation for diversity among all members of the University community.

The opening ceremony for the celebration will be held at noon Feb. 7 in the Schine Student Center Atrium. The ceremony will feature Korean drummers, a reading of the One World Declaration by Dean Wolfe, and a prize presentation to Trishul R. Rai, a graduate student in the School of Management who designed the winning logo for the One World Celebration. A closing reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 14 in the Eggers Commons. SU’s Brazilian Ensemble will perform at 5 p.m.

International specialties such as Italian Wedding Soup, Asian Baked Tempah and fried plantains will be served at the campus dining centers on Feb. 12, and international food specials will be featured at the Schine and Goldstein dining centers throughout the celebration. A “Valentine to the World” will be displayed in the entrance of the Schine Student Center through Feb. 14, and members of the University community are invited to include their own messages.

Two exhibits will be on display through Feb. 14. “An Artist’s View of the Muslim World,” an exhibition of paintings by John Thompson, professor of visual communication in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, will be on display in the Schine Student Center’s Panasci Lounge. The exhibition is sponsored by Arts Adventure. “The World’s Art In Our Art World,” an exhibition of the work of more than 200 Central New York young artists in grades kindergarten through high school, will be on display in the Huntington Gallery, located on the lower level of Huntington Hall. An opening reception to honor the artists will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 9 in the gallery. The exhibit is sponsored by the University’s Student Art Education Association and the School of Education’s Graduate Student Advisory Committee.

Additionally, an Asian Art Exhibit will be on display at the Schine Student Center’s White Cube Art Gallery from Feb. 12 to 14, and a Haitian Art Exhibit will be on display in 228B Schine from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 13

The Division of International Programs Abroad (DIPA) will hold several informational meetings about study abroad. Scheduled meetings include: Strasbourg, France, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. in 228B Schine; Madrid, Spain, Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. in 228B Schine; Hong Kong, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. in 232 Schine; Florence, Italy, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. in 304A Schine; and London, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. in 304A Schine.

Feb. 7

o Kishore Gawande of the University of New Mexico will present “Exclusions for Sale: A Test of the Grossman-Helpman Model for Free Trade Agreements” at 3:45 p.m. in 441 Eggers Hall. The presentation is part of the Center for Policy Rsearch’s Seminar Series housed in the Maxwell School.

o Bernice Johnson Reagon will give the 17th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Public Affairs Lecture, “Everybody Sings Freedom: Contemporary Notes From the Journal of a Freedom Singer,” The event is sponsored by the Department of African American Studies in The College of Arts and Sciences. A reception and book signing be held at 8:30 p.m. in the Shaffer Galleria.

o The Association of International Students at SU (AISSU) will sponsor a showing of the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” from 7 to 10:30 p.m. in Room 107 of the Hall of Languages. Refreshments will be provided.

Feb. 8

o A presentation on “Diversity in the Workplace for Engineers” will be given by Prasanta Ghosh, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Ann Martin at 10 a.m. in Room 369 of Link Hall.

o The Fourth Annual Sojourner Storytelling Conference: “Memory and ReMemory” will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. Renowned writer, lecturer and historical performer Sally Roesch Wagner will present the keynote address from 7 to 9 p.m. The event, part of the 2002 Syracuse Symposium, “Exploring Beauty,” is sponsored by Hendricks Chapel’s Students Offering Service and African American Programs, the Department of English, The College of Arts and Sciences, Syracuse University Continuing Education and other University academic and administrative departments, and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

o The Department of Geography in The College of Arts and Sciences and the Maxwell School will host “Between Anonymity and Solidarity: Kurdish & Turkish Women in Istanbul,” a presentation by Anna Secor of the University of Kentucky, at 3 p.m. in 018 Eggers Hall.

o A “Discussion of Different Cultures at SU” will be hosted by the National Society of Black Engineers and the Caribbean Student Association at 6 p.m. in Room 102 of the Hall of Languages.

o AISSU will present an Indian movie from 6 to 9 p.m. in Kittredge Auditorium in Huntington Beard Crouse Hall. The movie admission is free. There is limited seating for a traditional Indian dinner. Tickets are available at the Slutzker Center for International Services on a first-come, first-served basis.

o An International Skating Party will be held at the Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion on South Campus from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Feb. 9

o The Residence Hall Association will sponsor its annual Campus Cabaret talent show from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Schine Student Center’s Goldstein Auditorium. Free tickets are available at the Schine Box Office, 443-4517.

o Libba’s Place coffeehouse will host jazz, ragtime, bluegrass and sacred music at 8 p.m. at Hendricks Chapel.

o The Committee on Women and Art Matrilineage Symposium Concert will be held at 8 p.m. in The Underground, located in the Schine Student Center.

o The Black Artist League will host Jazz Night at Perc Place in the Schine Student Center’s Panasci Lounge from 9 p.m. to midnight.

o WAER FM-88 will air the World Song Shop at 10 p.m.

o A video of the University Forum on “Some Origins of the Crisis” will be shown at 11:30 a.m. in Schine Dining.

o A presentation on “Health Systems Around the Globe” will be given by Sudha Raj and Brad Beran, assistant professors in the College of Human Services and Health Professions, at 10 a.m. in room 218 of the Center for Science and Technology.
