The Center for Policy Research in The Maxwell School of Syracuse University will host “Leveraging New York State’s Intellectual Assets: Collaboration Between the Public and Academic Sectors,” a presentation by Arthur J. Roth, New York state commissioner of taxation and finance, at 10 a.m. March 9 in Room 426 of Eggers Hall. New York state has undergone a radical transformation during the past six years. To position the state favorably for the new millennium, Gov. George Pataki has built a new economic foundation that relies upon the intellectual assets of the people of New York. Recognizing the outstanding higher education infrastructure already in place, New York encourages collaboration between governmental entities and leading academic institutions. The State University’s Center for Environmental Science and Technology (CESTM, located at the University at Albany) and the Centers for Advanced Technology, such as SU’s Center for Computer Applications and Software Engineering (CASE Center), are serving as incubators for responsible economic development throughout the state. By leveraging the talent contained in our academic institutions with the public policy initiatives advanced by the state, the private sector can be encouraged to invest in New York’s future, Roth says. Roth will discuss his role in Gov. Pataki’s efforts to make New York state a technology leader in the 21st century. He will detail his experiences with CESTM and the Centers for Advanced Technology, and will provide an overview of Gov. Pataki’s 2001 budget proposal, with a focus on the proposed high technology “Centers of Excellence” and the state’s Empire Zones. For more information on Roth’s presentation, call 443-2703.
