Samba Laranja
Samba Laranja: the Syracuse University Brazilian Ensemble will participate in an interactive drumming performance with Jim Donovan, an award-winning educator, author and musician from the band Rusted Root on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. at Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church, 5299 Jamesville Rd., Syracuse. The family-friendly performance is part of a series of autism awareness events presented by the Margaret L. Williams Developmental Evaluation Center in Syracuse. It is free and open to the public.
In addition to Samba Laranja, local participants will include Open Hand Theater, Liverpool Art Center and SyraDRUM.
Formed in 2001 and based in the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, Samba Laranja consists of undergraduate and graduate students from a wide variety of studies at SU. The ensemble combines voice and percussion to perform several styles of Brazilian music, with an emphasis on samba, samba-reggae, forró, bossa nova, the music of Capoeira and MPB (Brazilian popular music).
