With a total city population of 140,000, Syracuse’s 14,000 refugees make up approximately 10 percent of its total—a number nearly as large as the entire undergraduate student body at the University. The city’s refugees hail from all over the world, including Bhutan, Burma, Iraq, Somalia and Vietnam. SUPRA is a diverse graduate student organization, with volunteers from almost all of the University’s colleges, that provides a variety of assistance to Syracuse’s refugees. Currently, SUPRA is looking for volunteers to serve as executive board members, ESL teachers/tutors (no experience necessary) and public relations and communications specialists (for website maintenance, advertising, photography, etc.).
