SRC donates science equipment to two Syracuse schools through engineering partnership program with Syracuse University, SCSD

Middle school students attending the Syracuse City School District’s Blodgett K-8 and Danforth Middle schools will benefit from newly donated science equipment as a result of a donation from SRC Inc., formerly Syracuse Research Corp.

SRC, a not-for-profit research and development leader in the science, technology and information field, is providing $2,300 worth of equipment as part of the SRC/LCS Engineering Ambassadors Program. The program is a collaboration among Syracuse University’s L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS), SU’s Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public & Community Service (CPCS) and the SCSD that helps sixth- and eighth-graders at the Blodgett and Danforth schools improve their computer, math and science skills.

SRC President and CEO Bob Roberts presented the equipment to Blodgett and Danforth administrators today during a formal ceremony at Danforth Middle School. SU staff and SRC/LCS ambassadors affiliated with these literacy initiatives were also present at the ceremony.

“SRC’s new philanthropic program, SRC Cares, is focused primarily on education specifically related to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM),” says Roberts. “We are proud to be involved with the SRC/LCS Engineering Ambassadors Program, as it provides opportunities for students to learn more about STEM disciplines and encourages them to pursue technical areas of study. We also participate in the ‘Say Yes to Education’ program, and this program coordinates with that effort to benefit the entire community.”

Now in its fourth year, the SRC/LCS Engineering Ambassadors Program was developed to increase middle school student interest in science and technology. The program expanded in its third year to include programming at Danforth Middle School and has plans to expand again.
The program helps students transition from middle school into high school, supporting them to persist to graduation and in their pursuit of career goals through post-secondary training or higher education. LCS students serve as role models, leaders and friends to the Blodgett and Danforth students enrolled in the after-school tutoring program while facilitating hands-on science lessons.

The program is being run in Syracuse with a goal to develop a national model that can be used to replicate the science, tutoring and literacy skills-building effort in other SRC communities throughout the United States.
