Setnor’s Opera Theater to Present ‘Dido and Aeneas’ Jan. 23-25

Alexander Alpert as Aeneas, Jing Liu as Dido, and Catherine Bauman as Belinda in Henry Purcell’s opera “Dido and Aeneas,” being presented Jan 23-25 in Setnor Auditorium.

The Opera Theater in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music will present Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas” Jan. 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College.

The cast of “Dido and Aeneas” features outstanding young artists from the Setnor School, including graduate students Angky Budiardjono and Jing Liu, senior Jaclyn Clark and juniors Catherine Bauman, Maria Whitcomb and Alexander Alpert.

Produced and directed by Eric Johnson, “Dido and Aeneas” will be performed in English with orchestra conducted by Jose “Peppie” Calvar. Both Johnson and Calvar are faculty members in the Setnor School.

Tickets for the general public are $10, available at the door and payable by cash only. Admission is free for Syracuse University students with a valid SU I.D. The running time of each performance is approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

“Dido and Aeneas” is a masterwork of early Baroque opera. The story is freely adapted from an episode in Virgil’s “Aeneid” and concerns the doomed love of Dido, queen of Carthage, for Aeneas, prince of Troy. Despite the mythological subject matter, the libretto is psychologically astute and continues to speak to contemporary audiences. The score features some of Purcell’s most tuneful writing, culminating with Dido’s great aria “When I Am Laid in Earth.”

For most Setnor Auditorium events, free and accessible parking is available in the Q1 lot. Additional parking is available in the Irving Garage. Campus parking availability is subject to change; call 315-443-2191 for current information or for more information about the opera.
