The Department of Art in the College of Visual and Performing Arts will present “Tacit Knowledge,” an exhibition of work by undergraduate students, faculty and recent alumni from Leeds College of Art (LCA) in England Nov. 13-29 on the Wall, the first-floor hallway exhibition space in the Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer Art Building.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. An opening reception with guests Sheila Gaffney and Terence Jones, visiting LCA faculty, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 5-7 p.m.
Tacit knowledge is “know-how.” For an art student, this means unspoken trust, a passing of knowledge not described with words but implicit in the group situation. The artists in “Tacit Knowledge” hope to engage viewers with a consolidated body of “know-how” current in their studios and invite a dialogue about the translation of such across geographic boundaries.
The artists exhibiting work include Yvonne Baines, Saul Brummitt, Adam Collier, Charlie Eden, Stephen Ellis, Sheila Gaffney, Joseph Gibney, Edward Grant, Richard Green, Sarah Hawkins, Nicholas Kidd, Terence Lister, Megan Needham, Rachel Page, Thomas Parker, Ella Pattinson, Thomas Rowell, Karl Simms, Sarah Taylor and Jonathan Videgrain.
“Tacit Knowledge” represents the reciprocal exhibition exchange for the Department of Art student show “Common Language,” which traveled to Leeds and York St. John University last fall.
LCA is proud of being one of the few remaining independent specialist art and design institutions in the U.K. Fine art practice at LCA aims to develop studio practice with an emphasis on craft and skill while enabling students to position themselves and their practice in terms of art history and critical thought, equipping them with the tools to map and research their own concerns. This ongoing development over three levels of study is explored in relation to an informed, considered understanding and application of a professional public-facing experience.
Shaffer Art Building is open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. The building will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, Nov. 27, and Friday, Nov. 28. Parking is available in SU pay lots.
