University College Wins UPCEA Award for Excellence in Faculty/Staff Development

University College of Syracuse University won the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Region UPCEA Award for Excellence in Faculty/Staff Development for its submission of the Innovative Summer Program Development Fund. The Innovative Summer Program Development Fund was created in 2011 in an effort to promote summer course offerings, increase summer enrollment and provide a platform for faculty to explore new curriculum and new modes of delivery. Since its inception, more than 50 summer programs and courses have been funded, which generated 900 student enrollments in summer sessions. Many of these students were new to summer study.

“The fund operates like a venture capital fund,” says Dean Bea González. “It provides faculty with an opportunity to explore new areas of curriculum while eliminating the financial risk to the faculty’s home school or college.”

The award will be presented at the UPCEA Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference in Newark, Del., on Oct. 9.

University College’s Summer@Syracuse oversees studies for full-time, part-time and visiting students during the summer.
