Dr. Ruth Chen, professor of practice at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, has joined the board of directors of the United Way of Central New York.

United Way’s board of directors governs the organization and makes vital policy and funding decisions in support of its mission to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of the community. Board governance extends through committees—each tasked with essential oversight of United Way’s community engagement initiatives.
Dr. Chen serves on the United Way Community Impact Committee, which is responsible for assessing the community’s needs, working with the agencies that United Way funds to track their progress, and during the three-year funding cycle application process, recruits and trains community volunteers to assess agency program proposals and recommend funding allocations, among other things.
The United Way supports 34 local agencies and funds 91 programs. Syracuse University has conducted a United Way campaign each fall for more than 42 years.
Dr. Chen holds a Ph.D. and M.P.H. in environmental toxicology from the University of Michigan and an M.S. in biomedical sciences from the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston. She is the wife of Chancellor Kent Syverud.
