The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications will present the second annual Marty Glickman Award for Leadership in Sports Media to alumnus Marv Albert ’63 at an invitation-only event July 29 in New York City. Follow on Twitter at #TheMartyAward.

Fellow alumnus Bob Costas ’74 will present Albert with the award, which is sponsored by the Newhouse Sports Media Center. Costas received the first award last year.

The award is named for sportscasting pioneer Marty Glickman, a 1939 alumnus of Syracuse University. Glickman’s legacy marks the beginning of the Newhouse School’s reputation for turning out more talented sports journalists than any other program in the country, leading Syracuse University to be hailed as an “incubator” of American sportscasters by Sports Illustrated. Costas credits him with “laying out the geography of the basketball court” for succeeding generations of sportscasters—many of them Syracuse alumni. Albert chose to attend SU because Glickman had gone there.

In addition to Costas and Albert, other sportscasting greats who followed in Glickman’s footsteps include Hank Greenwald ’57, Andy Musser ’59, Dick Stockton ’64, Len Berman ’68, G’70, Sean McDonough ’84, Mike Tirico ’88, Ian Eagle ’90 and Dave Pasch ’94. The Newhouse reach also extends beyond broadcasting—alumni have a major presence among the ranks of sports journalists, producers, directors and editors across all media. Illustrious sports writers include Pete Thamel ’99, Beth Mowins G’90, Connor Ennis ’00, Greg Bishop ’02, Kimberley A. Martin G’06, Marcus Hayes ’90 and Mallory Rubin ’08.

The Newhouse Sports Media Center builds upon the Newhouse School’s strength in sports journalism. The center provides oversight for the school’s sports communications emphasis, a specialized track for graduate students, and strengthens academic-industry partnerships through an alumni board, special events and guest lectures. Associated faculty members serve as experts on issues in the field. Veteran broadcast journalist and professor of practice John Nicholson ’68 is director of the center.

For more information about the event, contact Nicholson at 315-443-4065 or jsnich01@syr.edu. Members of the media wishing to attend and cover the event should contact Wendy Loughlin by July 25 at 315-443-2785 or wsloughl@syr.edu.
