The College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Department of Drama was ranked No. 13 on the Hollywood Reporter’s (THR) list of the “25 Best Drama Schools in 2014” in its June 6 issue. The article cites such notable alumni as Aaron Sorkin ’83 H’12, Frank Langella ’59 and Taye Diggs ’93. The rankings were based on a THR poll of 60 top casting directors and agents.
The department was ranked No. 20 on the list in 2013 and was also named to the list in 2012.
SU Drama offers conservatory-style training in a university setting shared with a resident, professional theater (Syracuse Stage), presenting an unparalleled combination of teaching professionals and diverse performance and production opportunities. The department offers four conservatory-style bachelor of fine arts degree programs in acting, musical theater, stage management and theater design and technology, as well as a bachelor of science degree program in drama that features a theater management track.
Undergraduates put classroom theory into practice through productions and various special opportunities, including Wednesday Lab, study abroad, the New York City-based Tepper Semester, the Sorkin in L.A. Learning Practicum, numerous community engagement initiatives and the opportunity to participate in workshops or discussions with such visiting artists as Vanessa Williams ’85, David Henry Hwang, Tim Miller and Tony Kushner, as well as Sorkin, Langella and Diggs.
