Painting Majors Present Group Exhibition in Shaffer Art Building

Undergraduate students in SU’s painting department are displaying a year’s worth of artwork in Shaffer Art Building from March 2-15. Senior painting majors Maritza Feliciano, Samantha Glevick, Julia Grosso, Talia Haviv, Mary Luke and Jenna Race have prepared paintings on The Wall, which is housed on the first floor of Shaffer Art Building. All juniors, sophomores and freshmen are exhibiting artwork on the fourth floor of the same building.

The show is the culmination of work by every undergraduate painting major in the annual Painting Awards Competition. Students have each presented three or four of their recent works in hopes of winning departmental awards and putting on a a lively art show. Just a few steps from the quad, the Painting Awards Exhibition offers a creative respite for students in the midst of Syracuse’s harsh winter weather.

The inaugural year of departmental reviews led to the inception of this show by offering junior and senior painting majors individual critiques from lauded professors Sharon Gold, Andrew Havenhand, Kevin Larmon, Jerome Witkin and Stephen Zaima. Thus, a vast array of technical skills and philosophical perspectives clothes the walls of Shaffer Art Building as spring break approaches. Following the break, senior painting majors will display their BFA theses in various solo and two-person shows around the city of Syracuse and at VPA’s brand new 914 Works gallery.
