A group of students from Japan’s Senzoku Gakuen College of Music are in Syracuse for a week of collaborative music-making at the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music.

The 23 students, who are enrolled in Senzoku Gakuen’s rock and pops program and accompanied by Professor Tune Maeno, are participating in ensemble rehearsals, improvisation classes and recording sessions and will perform in two public events.

On Thursday, Feb. 27, at 8 p.m., the Senzoku Gakuen students and Maeno will participate in the annual PRISM concert, which features innovative performances by students from the Setnor School and the SU community. The free concert will be held in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College. Free and accessible concert parking is available in the Q1 lot. Additional parking is available in the Irving Garage. Campus parking availability is subject to change; call 315-443-2191 for current information or for more information about the concert.

On Friday, Feb. 28, Senzoku Gakuen and Setnor students will present the concert “East Meets West” at the Lost Horizon, 5863 Thompson Rd., Syracuse. Produced by Setnor faculty member Dan Mastronardi and students in his “Live Music Promoter” class, the concert will feature rock, pop, funk and solo acoustic performances. The concert begins at 8:30 p.m.; doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5 and available at the door. Learn more at http://www.thelosthorizon.com.

Setnor faculty member Bill DiCosimo established a collaborative relationship with Senzoku Gakuen more than a year ago when he invited Maeno and college administrator Yujiro Maeda to visit the Setnor School to observe classes, performing ensembles and recording sessions; tour the SU campus; and attend concerts, including one by trio Grupo Pagán, featuring Edgar Pagán, DiCosimo and Setnor faculty member Josh Dekaney. Maeda invited Grupo Pagán to Senzoku Gakuen in January to conduct master classes and recording sessions and perform with students and faculty. Setnor music industry seniors and PRISM concert co-producers Robert Righthand and Athena Margarites accompanied Grupo Pagán to Japan to assist with social media, marketing, and photo and video documentation, as well as to perform with the trio.

For more information about the collaboration with Senzoku Gakuen, contact DiCosimo at wjdicosi@syr.edu.
