Banning smoking on the Syracuse University campus is the subject of the next Campbell Debate, a series on timely issues of public importance sponsored by the Campbell Public Affairs Institute at SU’s Maxwell School.
The event will be held on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 7-8:30 p.m. in Heroy Auditorium, with a reception immediately afterward.
Modeled after the Oxford Union debates, two panels will argue for each side, followed by counterpoints and audience questions and comments. The format fosters a lively, informative exchange of ideas in a way not common to contemporary American political debates.
Cliff Douglas from the University of Michigan and Duane Ford, a current SU student and former vice president of the SU Student Association, will argue for the proposition. New York State Sen. John DeFrancisco and Alexandra Curtis, a current SU student and former president of the SU Student Association, will oppose it.
