We invite you for participation in the research project “Health Behaviors among African American College Students.” This study was designed to better understand determinants of health behaviors in college students of African descent. College students of African descent have not been well-represented in many fields of science, which makes our study particularly important to inform the development of prevention efforts to improve college health.
To qualify for the study participation, you must (1) be at least 18 years of age, (2) speak English, (3) be a part-time or full-time college student, (4) be of African descent (Black or African American) and (5) have consumed alcohol at least once during the past 30 days.
If you choose to participate in this study, you will be asked to visit our lab to complete a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. The questionnaire will ask about your health behaviors (including alcohol and substance use) and your social environment. In addition, you will be asked to donate saliva for genotyping analysis. These tasks will take approximately one hour and 30 minutes of your time.
All information that you provide will remain anonymous; that is, your personal identifying information will not be attached to your responses and genotypes. If you participate in the entire research project, you will receive $15 for your 90 minutes of time. If you complete only a portion of this project, you will receive payment that is prorated based on the amount of time devoted to this project, rounding up to the nearest half hour. For example, if you participate for about 30 minutes, you will receive $5; if you participate for about 1 hour, you will receive $10. If you complete our study, you will have an option of earning an additional payment by referring up to three friends to our study. For each eligible student who is referred and has participated in our project, you will receive an electronic gift card of $5 to Starbucks (up to a maximum of $15 for three friends).
