David M. Van Slyke
Award-winning teacher and researcher David M. Van Slyke has been named to fill the Louis A. Bantle Chair in Business and Government Policy at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Van Slyke, a professor of public administration and international affairs, has been a member of the Maxwell School faculty since 2004. His research focuses on public and nonprofit management, government contracting, public-private partnerships, strategic management and policy implementation.
In making the announcement, Maxwell Dean James Steinberg said, “The Bantle Chair is a fitting recognition for Dave’s leadership role at the Maxwell School, as well as for his innovative and widely recognized work in the field of government contracting and public-private partnerships.”
Van Slyke also serves as a non-resident faculty member in the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. He is an elected (2010) fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and a recipient of the Birkhead-Burkhead Professorship for Teaching Excellence Award (2006-2010), the 2007 Beryl Radin Award for Best Article published in the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, and the 2002 Best Article Award and the 1999 Best Conference Paper Award from the Academy of Management’s Public-Nonprofit Division.
He has written extensively on a range of topics in public administration, including the co-edited volume “The Future of Public Administration Around the World: The Minnowbrook Perspective,” published to wide acclaim in 2010. Van Slyke’s 2013 book is “Complex Contracting: Government Purchasing in the Wake of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Deepwater Program” (Cambridge University Press), which is actively being used across several different government agencies. He serves on several editorial boards, including the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, American Review of Public Administration, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, the American Review of Public Administration and the Journal of Public Affairs Education.
Van Slyke was a member of the Public Management Research Association (PMRA) Board of Directors from 2007-2011 and served as the 2011 PMRA conference chair. He is actively engaged in executive education and has conducted trainings around the world, including in China, India, Singapore and Thailand, and worked in Russia with the World Bank on issues of corruption in government contracting and partnerships. Van Slyke also serves on several nonprofit boards, and is actively engaged in his professional and local community.
Prior to becoming an academic, Van Slyke worked in the private sector as a project manager in the commercial infrastructure field, then worked in state government in educational policy, and then for a national nonprofit organization. He holds a Ph.D. in public administration and policy from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the University at Albany.
The Louis A. Bantle Chair was established in 1990 by Louis F. Bantle and UST, Inc., and provides for teaching and research in business and government relations.
