Security Reminders for Convocations and Commencement

Commencement

With thousands expected to attend convocations on campus Friday and Saturday, and Commencement in the Carrier Dome on Sunday, the University reminds graduating students, family members, faculty, staff and visitors that general security screening procedures will be in place at each venue. This includes Manley Field House, Schine Student Center, Hendricks Chapel, Setnor Auditorium in Crouse College and the Carrier Dome.

Like many universities nationally, SU is working to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all. As in years past, graduates and guests should leave large bags, backpacks, duffel bags, shopping bags and wrapped gifts at home. Bags larger than 10″ x 10″ will not be allowed into convocations or Commencement and all purses, binocular cases and camera cases will be opened and inspected. There will not be a holding area for items at any venue. All attendees may be subject to standard metal-detection wanding, so please plan accordingly and allow extra time.

Carrier Dome gates will open at 7 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.  Manley Field House doors will open at 7 a.m. on Saturday. Schine Student Center doors will open at 7 a.m. on Saturday.

As always, the following items are prohibited at convocations and Commencement:

  • Air horns, backpacks, balls, balloons, banners, beach balls, coolers, confetti, containers, large purses, duffel bags, laser pointers, noise makers, inflatables, promotional items, shopping bags, large signs.
  • Firearms, explosives and fireworks.
  • Food and beverages may not be brought into the Carrier Dome, except for medical reasons or for infants.

Service dogs are the only animals permitted inside of Commencement Weekend venues.

For additional guidelines, see the Decorum section of the Commencement website.
