How well do you really know the place where we live and work? Here’s a chance to explore some of the vital systems we take for granted, to get a behind-the-scenes look at how they function, to meet local experts and colleagues from other disciplines, and to think about the role of place in your professional work. Each session will involve a field trip to two or more “hotspots” in the local ecosystem, followed by a lunch discussion with your colleagues.
Tours will be led by Rachel May, coordinator of Sustainability Education, with the assistance of guest experts. To register for one or more of the tours or for more information, e-mail her at sumay@syr.edu. Space is limited, and some effort will be made to include faculty from a diversity of disciplines. Tours will depart from the Waverly Parking Lot.
Friday, May 10, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: WASTE NOT
Onondaga County is nationally recognized for its efforts to reduce waste. See first hand some of the successes and challenges of re-use and recycling, and learn about OCRRA’s state-of-the-art composting facility. We will tour the Recycle America facility where recyclables are sorted and the Rescue Mission’s re-use operations.
Monday, May 13, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: MEET YOUR WATERSHED
Learn about the history and ecology of Onondaga Lake and the county’s nationally recognized “Save the Rain” program. Tour the Honeywell Visitor Center to learn about Onondaga Lake cleanup and restoration activities and visit some of the innovative “green infrastructure” the county is using to keep polluted storm water out of the Lake, with Khris Dodson of Save the Rain.
Tuesday, May 21, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: HOMEGROWN
Many people are trying to “eat local,” but access to fresh, local food can be a challenge in urban areas. Visit some of the innovative efforts to produce and distribute local food and promote food justice in Syracuse. Prof. Evan Weissman from Food Studies will introduce us to the exciting projects of Syracuse Grows, and Regional Market director Ben Vitale will take us behind the scenes at that local institution.
