This presentation on Friday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m. in 105 Life Sciences Complex, provides an overview of a very important concept that needs to be embraced more readily by engineers, architects, geologists, and planners—the creation and development of underground space. The presentation initially poses challenges for the future. Then a brief history of underground space development is traced, citing both the usages and the advances in technology that allowed the developments. Current implementations then are discussed. Examples are shown of world-wide applications over a broad spectrum of human activities. Then future challenges again are posed. This light and lively talk has no equations and heavy technical details. Instead, it is geared to general interests on the subject. All who may be interested in the concepts of underground space are encouraged to attend and enjoy the discussion!
