Syracuse University student members of the Student Leadership Institute, a year-long program coordinated by the Office of Student Activities within the Division of Student Affairs, are planning the second annual SU Student Leadership Conference on Feb. 9. This one-day event provides an opportunity for students to learn skills and competencies that will help them to become dynamic leaders on campus and in the community. This year’s conference theme is “Real Talk. Real Action.”
Located at the Schine Student Center and the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel and Conference Center, the full-day conference is free for students with an SU or SUNY-ESF ID. Attendees will receive breakfast and lunch, and conference give-aways.
The conference features two keynote speakers, Donna Michelle Anderson (DMA) and Morris Morrison, as well as breakout sessions that will introduce students to the skills and competencies in areas of focus, such as professional development, health and wellness and community and diversity.
Anderson is an influential writer and producer for top-rated television series. Her work has been featured on several major television netowrks such as CBS, Bravo, BET, A&E and TLC. Anderson is the founder of the CLIC Network, a social network for college-bound students. She is a graduate of Stanford University.
Morrison is a motivational speaker, entrepreneur and owner of the Morris Morrison Development Group, LLC, which focuses on helping organizations grow with engaging and inspiring products. Morrison received his B.A. from Fairmount State College and his M.A. from West Virginia University.
“The conference will be an amazing opportunity for students to come together to learn about themselves, as well as about skills that will serve them well,” says Kerry Foxx, associate director of student activities. “There will even be an opportunity for students to interact with potential employers.”
“It shows you how to take advantage of your time here at the university, and I think that you don’t really understand the opportunities you have unless you come to something like this,” says Margaret Clevenger, a public relations and policy studies major, past conference attendee and current Institute member.
