Solemn ceremonies Monday on the Syracuse University campus, as services were held to pay tribute to the men and women who serve.
LTC Miguel Sapp served as master of ceremonies for a touching tribute held at Hendricks Chapel. Members of all military branches were honored during services. Keynote speaker Vice Admiral Robert B. Murrett spoke about how Syracuse University’s history is one that is rich in veteran involvement. After World War two, the population at SU swelled as returning soldiers took advantage of the GI Bill to attend college.
Before Monday’s ceremonies, the names of more than 6-thousand military men and women killed since the terrorist attacks of 9/11 were read aloud on the steps of Hendricks Chapel. Among the volunteers reading the names was Daniel Cohen. He is Associate Director of Employer Relations for Veterans’ Advising at the School of Information Studies, and also a veteran of two tours of duty in Iraq. Cohen served as an army captain. After he finished reading some of the names, he spoke with us about what Veterans Day means for him, and if the american public truly does appreciate its vets.
