In collaboration with 40 Below, Syracuse University’s Office of Government and Community Relations and Off-Campus and Commuter Services within the Division of Student Affairs are hosting a Community Engagement Soiree on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Café Kubal in Marshall Square Mall.
The event will feature Frank Lazarski, president of United Way of Central New York and visiting instructor at the Maxwell School of Citizenship Public Affairs, who will be discussing ways students can build their resumes by getting involved in the local community and becoming civically engaged. The event is free and open to SU and SUNY-ESF students. Complimentary coffee and pastries will be provided, as well as door prizes and giveaways.
“Our office is committed to educating students about all aspects of living off campus,” says Elin Riggs, director of Off-Campus and Commuter Services. “We believe it is just as vital as teaching them how to search for an apartment. We hope that through this program, students will become familiar with community and civic agencies here in the city, as well as learn how volunteering and getting involved can help build their resume.”
Following the event, students will have the opportunity to network with civic and community leaders from a diversity of local agencies. Some community organizations represented and in attendance include the Westcott East University Neighborhood Association, South East University Neighborhood Association, Outer Comstock Neighborhood Association, Thornden Park Association, Northside Urban Partnership, Common Council members, Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service and Westcott Community Center. Other civic agencies represented include Meals on Wheels, Downtown Committee of Syracuse, PEACE, Syracuse City School District, United Way and Rescue Mission.
