SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

A Korea Times opinion piece on pop culture and Korea’s social media footprint cites analysis of a viral video phenomenon by Ines Mergel, assistant professor of public administration and international affairs at the Maxwell School.

The Newhouse Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship is featured in a PBS “MediaShift” report on media entrepreneurship ventures across the country. Lorraine Branham, dean of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication; Sean Branagan, center director; Daniel Pacheco, professor of practice; and Bruce Strong, associate professor and chair of multimedia photography and design; are mentioned in the piece.

Jason Fridley, assistant professor of biology at The College of Arts and Sciences, is featured in a WAMC Northeast Public Radio “Academic Minute” segment discussing research on invasive plants in the fall growing season.

A West Palm Beach Post article about a “Hiring Our Heroes” job fair for veterans and military spouses held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center this week cites August veteran unemployment statistics released in the most recent Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) monthly Employment Situation of Veterans report. Also, the Hartford Business Journal mentions the national Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities program and founder Mike Haynie in a Q&A with EBV-UConn program manager Michael J. Zacchea. The EBV was founded in 2007 at the Whitman School and is operated by the IVMF.

Syracuse University Press is mentioned in a YNN report on eBook technology and local libraries.

Local media coverage of the International Day of Peace “living” peace sign assembled on the Kenneth A. Shaw Quad in conjunction with SU Humanities Center “Eat Together for Peace” included reports by 9WSYR, CNY Central and the Post-Standard.

A College of Law Constitution Day event featuring legal history scholar Victoria Saker Woeste was highlighted in Post-Standard, WAER and 9WSYR reports. Woeste spoke about Louis Marshall’s legal battle against hate speech. Marshall, for whom the street is named, was a trustee of Syracuse University and helped establish SUNY-ESF. Woeste also met with Syracuse City Judge Kate Rosenthal, a Marshall relative.

William Ward, professor of practice in the Newhouse School, is quoted in a CNN Money article on higher education teaching digital and social media skills.

Milton Mueller, professor in the School of Information Studies (iSchool), is quoted in a Politico story on Internet governance and the United Nations, in advance of the December meeting of the International Telecommunications Union.

Michael Wasylenko, senior associate dean at the Maxwell School and professor of economics, is quoted in a Newsday (subscription required) article on the Suffolk County budget deficit.

An article in PR Week on the practice of quote approval among public relations professionals cites David Rubin, professor and dean emeritus at the Newhouse School.

Ross Rubenstein, associate dean in the Maxwell School, is quoted in an North Country Public Radio report on Say Yes to Education.

Dennis Deninger, professor of practice, Falk College Department of Sport Management, was interviewed by 9WSYR about the partnership that exists between the NFL and its broadcast partners, and how the number of cameras varies from game to game, impacting how many angles are available for officials to see during any given game broadcast.

Kelly Lux, iSchool online communication and relationship manager, authored a social media column in the Post-Standard CNY Business Exchange weekly supplement discussing offline community building with brand ambassadors.

Eric Kingson, professor in the School of Social Work in Falk College, authored a Post-Standard op-ed discussing Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle’s stated positions and actions relative to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
