Army News Service reported that the revamped transition assistance program (TAP) and Operation Boots to Business: From Service to Start, a pilot program launched by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) and the U.S. Small Business Administration, will begin at Fort Sill, Okla., this October. An interagency team testified to the House Veterans Affairs Committee’s subcommittee on economic opportunity about the revamped TAP yesterday. Boots to Business has already been successfully piloted with the Marine Corps.
Binghamton TV stations WBNG, WBGH/WIVT and WICZ aired stories on the new Syracuse University Forensic Science class at Johnson City High School in the Southern Tier, taught at the school in partnership with Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA). The SU CHE 113 course is taught by Johnson City High School teachers trained as SU adjunct professors. Students who pass the course receive SU university credit that can be transferred to other colleges. Twenty-eight Johnson City seniors are currently enrolled. Also, the Smithtown Matters (N.Y.) paper reported that area high school teacher Maria Zeitlin was named a SUPA Teacher of the Year.
A 9WSYR “Bridge Street” segment features Vice Adm. Robert B. Murrett, deputy director of the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism and professor of practice in the Maxwell School, along with Keith Doss, veterans’ advisor at the University’s Veterans Resource Center, discussing veterans’ issues. They noted SU’s alliance, historical and current, with veterans returning to civilian life, citing such programs as the IVMF and the upcoming Veterans’ Seminar Series. The Veterans Resource Center is housed at University College.
CNY Central reported on the nearly complete construction refurbishing the Place of Remembrance on campus, the memorial honoring victims of Pan Am Flight 103.
