Women of the University Community hosts annual fall gathering Oct. 10

The Women of the University Community (WUC) will hold its annual fall gathering and membership event on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 5-7 p.m. at the home of WUC member Judy Cavanagh, 1350 Westmoreland Ave., located just a few blocks from the SU campus. The annual event provides an opportunity for SU, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) and Upstate University Hospital community members to learn what the WUC is about and the chance to meet and mingle with current members in a relaxed and social atmosphere.

Established at SU in 1927, the WUC offers friendship and fellowship to current and retired faculty, staff, trustees and enrolled graduate students and their family members of SU, SUNY-ESF and Upstate University Hospital. Throughout the year the WUC organizes special member events, manages a popular holiday poinsettia plant sale and offers the opportunity for members to join or originate a variety of interest groups, such as book exchange, book review, creative cooking, duplicate bridge, garden group, mahjong, moms and tots, neighborhood groups children’s playgroups, scrapbooking/card making, among others.

The organization’s primary focus is on building three endowed scholarships that benefit women in the community. These include the Mildred Eggers award, presented to students in continuing education studying part time at SU’s University College; the Ruth Tolley award, presented to outstanding juniors in SU’s David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics; and the Beverly Whaley scholarship, presented to a sophomore or junior at SUNY-ESF.

For those who cannot attend the fall gathering, consider becoming a member of the WUC. Dues are minimal and members are needed to help keep the organization and its mission going for another 85 years. A regular membership is $20 per year, an honorary membership (retired, or spouse/partner of retired or deceased employee of affiliate) is $10 per year and an associate membership (sponsored guest member of an interest group) is $15 per year.
