SU NEWS AND EVENTS COVERAGE

Over the weekend the death of Pan Am Flight 103 convicted bomber Abdelbasat al-Megrahi made headlines around the world. Syracuse University was mentioned in thousands of news articles including stories filed by the Associated Press, Voice of America, the New York Daily News, CNN, and MSNBC.

SU archivist Ed Galvin spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation about the University’s Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives.

Judy O’Rourke, director of the Office of Undergraduate Studies, was featured in a Post-Standard column by Sean Kirst on her experience as the University’s main liaison to the families of the victims of Pan Am Flight 103.

Kelly Rodoski, News Services communications manager and chair of the University’s Pan Am Flight 103 25th Anniversary Committee, was interviewed by CNY Central, YNN and WIBX Radio in Utica.

The Post-Standard reported on Colgate University’s commencement and the honorary doctorate degree awarded to SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor.

The Post- Standard reported on the Special Collection Research Center in SU’s Bird Library, which houses a collection of Mike Wallace files from before “60 Minutes.” The files highlight Wallace’s interviews with some of the most notable people from the ’50s and ’60s. The 11 boxes contain papers with Wallace’s questions for each interview, typed and edited in pencil. The files are open to the public.

US News College Compass highlights SU as one of 2012’s best colleges.

Syracuse.com reported on the public launch of Microsoft’s new social network, So.cl, (pronounced “social”) after months of testing at SU and two other universities. College students were chosen to beta test the project since it focuses on combining search and sharing for research and education purposes.

FACULTY QUOTES

WCBS-NY Radio quoted Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, on the death of TV remote inventor Eugene Holley. Holley died in Illinois today. Also, Thompson, was interviewed on WSYR Newsradio 570/106.9 about the history and development of the disco music genre; the impact of the Bee Gees musical group; and the passing of Robin Gibb and Donna Summer.

David Cay Johnston, distinguished visiting lecturer in the College of Law, appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher, debating Grover Norquist on the economy and taxes.

Jeff Harris, professor of finance at the Whitman School of Management, made an appearance on Business News Network (Canada) discussing rising oil prices.

Sean Quimby, associate librarian in SU Library’s Special Collections, is quoted in The Times Tribune (Scranton, Pa.) concerning the transfer of railroad archives to the Steamtown National Historic Site in the Scranton area.
